Best Youth Softball Catcher's Gear (2026): Fastpitch Sets for 8U to 14U

For most 10U to 12U softball catchers, buy the Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Catcher's Kit for ages 9 to 12 (about $206). It is a fastpitch-specific helmet, chest protector and leg guard kit sized for her age from a team-sports brand, at a fair price. For a 7 to 9 year old, the All-Star Future Star Fastpitch Kit (about $159) is sized for her; for a 12U to 14U catcher who wants the best fit, the Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 (about $230) is designed around a female catcher's build; and for a 14U catcher headed to high school, the All-Star Heiress (about $280) is the kit that lasts.

Every set here is a three-piece fastpitch kit, which means a shorter chest protector, shorter leg guards and a smaller helmet shell than the baseball equivalent. Measure from the notch of the collarbone to the belly button. That number in inches is the chest-protector size, and it decides everything else. Ages are a starting point; a tall 11 year old is often intermediate and a small 13 year old is youth.

Leg guards are measured from the center of the kneecap to the top of the foot. The helmet is sized by head circumference; most 10U to 12U catchers wear a junior shell and most 14U a senior. Brand charts differ, so confirm on the listing. • Chest protector: top edge at the collarbone notch, bottom edge at or just above the belt. It should not ride up into her chin when she squats or cover her thighs.
• Leg guards: the knee cup centered on her kneecap, the bottom covering the top of the foot, and no gap at the knee when she is in her crouch.
• Helmet: snug with no rocking when she shakes her head, the chin cup under the chin, and clear vision in her crouch.
• The squat test: have her gear up and get into a full catcher's crouch, then block a ball. Anything that shifts, pinches or rides up is the wrong size.

Three things: a shorter, contoured chest protector, shorter leg guards, and smaller helmet shells. A baseball youth chest protector on a 12 year old girl often ends below the belt and rides up on every block. 1. Measure collarbone to belly button and find her size lane on the chart.

Buy the set unless she already owns a helmet that fits. The three pieces bought separately usually cost more than the set, and a set's pieces are sized to match.
