Key takeaways

  • Size: intermediate or Medium. Most 13 and 14 year olds measure about 15 to 16.5 inches from throat notch to belly button. Over about 16.5, look at adult or Large.
  • #1 pick: Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0, Medium (about $230). Designed around a female catcher; Easton listed the earlier Fundamental Medium as ages 12 to 15.
  • Best value: Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Kit, Ages 12+ (about $193). Step-up: Easton Jen Schro The Very Best, Medium (about $300).
  • Buy a NOCSAE-certified chest protector. Many high school associations now require one, and she is a season or two from high school ball. Check the mark on the protector and your league's rule.
  • Mitt: 33 to 34 inch fastpitch, about $70 to $150. Sets do not include one.
  • Budget: about $193 to $390. This is often the set she wears into high school, so it is worth buying well.

For most 14U softball catchers, buy the Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 fastpitch set in Medium (about $230). It is designed around a female catcher, sized in Easton's intermediate range, and priced well below the premium sets. On a budget, the Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Kit for ages 12 and up (about $193) is the cheapest fastpitch set in the right size.

14U is where catching gets serious. Pitchers throw hard and spin the ball, the catcher blocks more pitches in the dirt, and she is a season or two from high school rules. It is also usually the last age-banded set she buys: a Medium bought at 13 often lasts into high school, and after that she moves to adult sizing. Below: 7 verified sets for 13 and 14 year olds, a measure-first size chart, the mitt to pair, the NOCSAE rule, and when to go adult. For younger catchers, see our 12U fastpitch catcher's gear guide.

Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Medium
#1 · Best overall

Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Medium

~$230

The Jen Schro line is named for former UCLA catcher Jen Schroeder and designed around a female catcher: a chest protector shaped for her torso and fastpitch-length leg guards. The Fundamental 2.0 is the value version, and Medium is Easton's intermediate size (Easton listed the earlier Fundamental Medium as ages 12 to 15), which fits most 13 and 14 year olds.

💡 Medium bought at 13 often lasts into the first high school season. Measure: about 15 to 16.5 inches from throat notch to belly button is the target.

At about $230 it costs about $70 less than the Very Best and far less than the Velo or Samurai. Check Easton's chart on the listing and confirm the NOCSAE mark on the chest protector when it arrives.

Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Catcher's Kit, Ages 12+
#2 · Best value

Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Catcher's Kit, Ages 12+

~$193

Champro's Optimus Pro fastpitch kit in the ages 12+ size, about $193 and the cheapest fastpitch set in the right size for 14U. It is from a team brand many travel programs buy in bulk; a white version is also listed.

It is a straightforward kit without the female-specific shaping of the Jen Schro. Check for the NOCSAE mark on the chest protector when it arrives, since the listing does not print it in the title.

👍 What we like
  • About $193
  • Sized for 12 and up
  • Fastpitch kit
  • Team-brand durability
👎 What we don't
  • Less shaped than the Jen Schro

Easton Jen Schro The Very Best Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Medium
#3 · Step-up

Easton Jen Schro The Very Best Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Medium

~$300

The Very Best is the top of the Jen Schro line: the same female-catcher design as the Fundamental with upgraded padding and finish. Medium fits most 14U catchers.

At about $300 it is the step-up for a catcher who catches every inning of a travel schedule and is heading into high school ball. The protection standard is the same as the Fundamental; the difference is comfort and durability over a long season.

👍 What we like
  • Top of the Jen Schro line
  • Upgraded padding
  • Female-catcher design
  • Built for heavy use
👎 What we don't
  • About $300

Rawlings Velo Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Intermediate (Ages 12 to 15)
#4 · Premium Rawlings

Rawlings Velo Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Intermediate (Ages 12 to 15)

~$348

The Velo is Rawlings' premium fastpitch set, listed as NOCSAE certified, and the Intermediate cut is labeled for ages 12 to 15, a direct match for 14U. It has a hockey-style helmet, a longer chest protector than the youth cut, and fastpitch-length leg guards.

At about $348 and with limited stock, it is for a family set on the Velo. It listed near $200 in the summer; if the price drops back, it becomes a much stronger pick.

👍 What we like
  • NOCSAE certified per the listing
  • Labeled ages 12 to 15
  • Hockey-style helmet
  • Rawlings build
👎 What we don't
  • About $348

#5 · Newest line

All-Star Empress Fastpitch Catching Kit, Medium

At about $300 it is priced with the Jen Schro Very Best. Stock is limited at time of writing, so treat it as the pick for a catcher who wants All-Star and finds it in her size.

Mizuno Samurai Women's Catcher's Box Set, 14 to 15 in
#6 · Premium

Mizuno Samurai Women's Catcher's Box Set, 14 to 15 in

~$390

Mizuno's Samurai is its premium catcher's line, and this is the women's box set in the 14 to 15 inch size. Mizuno sizes these sets in inches rather than ages; check its chart against her measurements.

At about $390 it is the most expensive set here. It is for a committed catcher who wants premium gear she will wear into high school; the Jen Schro Fundamental gives a female-specific fit for $160 less.

👍 What we like
  • Mizuno's premium line
  • Women's cut
  • Sized in inches for a precise fit
  • Built to last into high school
👎 What we don't

Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Large
#7 · Big catchers

Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 Fastpitch Catcher's Set, Large

~$320

Some 14 year olds are already adult size. The Fundamental 2.0 in Large is Easton's adult size (Easton lists the Very Best 2.0 Large as ages 15 and up), for a catcher who measures past about 16.5 inches.

It costs about $320 at time of writing, more than the Medium. Buy it only if the measurement says so; a Large on a 15 inch torso is too long.

👍 What we like
  • Adult size for big catchers
  • Female-catcher design
  • Lasts through high school
👎 What we don't
  • About $320
  • Too big for most 13 year olds
Who should buy it: 14U catchers who measure over about 16.5 inches on the chest.

What size catcher's gear does a 14U softball player need?

An intermediate or Medium fastpitch set, with a chest protector of about 15 to 16.5 inches and leg guards of about 15 to 16 inches. Measure; 13 and 14 year olds vary more than any other age.

Chest (throat to belly button)Size to buyOur pick

Leg guards: center of the kneecap to the top of the ankle, about 15 to 16 inches at 14U. Helmet: most 14U catchers wear an adult shell. The full piece-by-piece chart is in the catcher gear sizing chart.

How should catcher's gear fit a 14 year old?

  • Chest protector: top edge at the collarbone notch, bottom edge at or just above the belt, no gap at the collarbones.
  • Leg guards: knee cup centered on the kneecap in the crouch, bottom covering the top of the foot.
  • Helmet: snug with no rocking, clear view in the crouch, chin cup seated.
  • Block and throw test: block a ball in the dirt, then come up throwing to second. Anything that shifts, pinches or limits the throw is the wrong size.

How to choose a 14U fastpitch catcher's set

  1. Measure chest and legs and confirm Medium or intermediate.
  2. Buy a fastpitch cut designed for her build.
  3. Make sure the chest protector is NOCSAE-certified. This is the set she will likely take into high school.
  4. Match the mitt: 33 to 34 inch fastpitch.
  5. Try it on in full gear and run the block and throw test before the return window closes.

Is NOCSAE required for 14U softball catcher's gear?

The helmet must be NOCSAE-certified in sanctioned play, and many high school associations now require a NOCSAE-certified chest protector too. NOCSAE's chest protector standard targets commotio cordis, a rare but serious heart event from a blow to the chest. Youth organizations are following the high school rule. Since a 14U set often carries into high school, buy a protector with the NOCSAE mark on it now. Check your league's and your state association's current rules.

What mitt does a 14U softball catcher need?

A fastpitch catcher's mitt of about 33 to 34 inches. The Wilson A700 33 inch (about $70) is the value pick, the Mizuno MVP Prime 34 inch (about $112) is the full-size step-up, and the Rawlings R9 33 inch (about $150) is for a catcher who wants a higher-grade leather mitt. More in our fastpitch catcher's mitt guide.

Accessories that matter at 14U

Knee savers, a throat guard if your league wants one, and a real gear bag. Rawlings knee savers (about $28, youth size; check the fit on her guards) reduce strain over a long tournament weekend, and the knee savers guide covers adult sizes. A Rawlings TP4 throat guard (about $13) attaches to the helmet cage. A wheeled catcher's bag keeps a full set and two mitts together.

Where league rules allow electronic pitch calling, a helmet-mount Bluetooth headset (about $13) velcroed inside her helmet turns it into a pitch-call receiver for the free MAVTRAX app; see softball pitch calling systems for how it works.

Set or separate pieces at 14U?

A set is still the better buy for most 14U catchers; pieces make sense when one measurement does not match the others. A set's helmet, chest protector and leg guards are sized to match, and buying the three pieces separately usually costs more. The exception is common at this age: a tall, lean 14 year old may need intermediate leg guards and a youth-length chest protector, or the reverse, and a set forces one size across both. If her chest and leg measurements land in different size bands, buy the pieces from our chest protector and leg guard guides and keep the helmet that fits.

Another reason to buy pieces: she already owns a helmet she likes. Catcher's helmets are sized by head measurement and are shared between baseball and softball, so a well-fitting hockey-style helmet can carry over. See our catcher's helmet guide for adult shells.

Why fastpitch gear matters more at 14U

Because the pitches and the blocks get harder, and a baseball-cut set fits a girl's torso worse the taller she gets. Baseball intermediate chest protectors are cut straight and long; on many 14U softball catchers they end below the belt and push up under the chin on every block. Fastpitch sets like the Jen Schro, Empress and Velo are shorter through the torso and shaped at the chest, and their leg guards are fastpitch length. By 14U she is also receiving rise balls, drop balls and changeups that bounce, so she spends more of every game dropping to block. Gear that stays in place through that motion is the whole point of buying a fastpitch set.

When to move to adult catcher's gear

Move to adult (Large) when her chest measures over about 16.5 inches, the Medium protector ends above the belly button, or the leg guards stop covering the top of the foot. Many catchers make that move in their first or second high school season. If she is still small for 14U, the 12U guide covers youth and Small sets.

Common 14U catcher's gear mistakes

  • Staying in youth gear too long. A short protector leaves the belly exposed on blocks.
  • Jumping to adult too early. A long protector limits her throw and rides up.
  • Skipping the NOCSAE check on the set she will take into high school.
  • Using a youth mitt. At 14U the pitch speed calls for a full-size fastpitch mitt.
  • Leaving gear wet. Dry it after every game to keep the padding and straps working.

FAQ

What size catcher's gear for a 14 year old softball player?

Usually an intermediate or Medium fastpitch set, with a chest protector of about 15 to 16.5 inches (throat notch to belly button) and leg guards of about 15 to 16 inches. Over about 16.5 inches, adult or Large.

What is the best 14U softball catcher's gear?

Our #1 pick is the Easton Jen Schro Fundamental 2.0 in Medium (about $230). The Champro Optimus Pro Fastpitch Kit, Ages 12+ (about $193) is the value pick, and the Easton Jen Schro The Very Best in Medium (about $300) is the step-up.

What size catcher's gear for a 13 year old softball player?

Most 13 year olds fit an intermediate or Medium set. A smaller 13 year old under about 15 inches on the chest may still fit a youth or Small set. Measure before you buy.

Will 14U catcher's gear last into high school?

Often, yes. A Medium or intermediate set bought at 13 or 14 frequently lasts into the first high school season. Make sure the chest protector carries the NOCSAE mark, since many high school associations require it.

Is NOCSAE required for softball chest protectors?

Many high school associations and a growing number of youth leagues require a chest protector that meets the NOCSAE standard. Look for the mark on the protector and check your league's rulebook.

What size mitt for a 14U softball catcher?

A fastpitch catcher's mitt of about 33 to 34 inches. Sets do not include a mitt.

What is the difference between intermediate and adult catcher's gear?

Length. Intermediate chest protectors are about 15 to 16.5 inches and leg guards about 15 to 16 inches; adult gear runs longer. Measure the catcher and match the specific brand's chart.

Can a 14U softball catcher use a baseball catcher's set?

She can, but baseball intermediate sets are cut longer and straighter, so the chest protector often ends below the belt and rides up on blocks. A fastpitch set such as the Easton Jen Schro is shaped for her torso and fits better at this age.

Should a 14U catcher buy a set or separate pieces?

A set is cheaper and matched in size, so it is the better buy for most. Buy pieces when her chest and leg measurements fall in different size bands, or when she already owns a catcher's helmet that fits.

Are Mizuno Samurai sets sized by age?

No, Mizuno sizes its Samurai box sets in inches (for example 13 to 14 or 14 to 15). Check Mizuno's size chart against her chest and leg measurements.
