Best Softball Glove for 12U (2026): 8 Picks for 11 to 12 Year Olds

A 12U softball player (ages 11 to 12) needs a fastpitch glove between 11.5 and 12.5 inches: 11.5 to 12 for infielders, 12 for pitchers, 12 to 12.5 for outfielders; our #1 pick is the Wilson A700 12" infield fastpitch glove (about $100). Eight verified gloves from about $28, a size chart by age and position, and why 12U is the year to switch to a real leather glove.

Key takeaways

  • Size: 11.5" to 12.5" for 12U, with 12" the best all-around size. Infielders 11.5" to 12", pitchers 12" with a closed web, outfielders 12" to 12.5".
  • #1 pick: Wilson A700 12" Infield Fastpitch Glove (about $100), a leather fastpitch glove in the size that covers most 12U positions.
  • Runner-up and best value: Rawlings Shut Out 12" (about $79). Budget: Rawlings Sure Catch 12" fastpitch (about $50).
  • 12U switches to the 12" ball in most leagues, which is why an 11" youth glove or a baseball glove starts dropping balls this season.
  • 12U is the right age for a first leather glove if she plays travel ball: hands are strong enough to break one in, and a 12" glove lasts into 14U.
  • First base and catcher need mitts, not gloves: see our fastpitch first base mitt and catcher's mitt guides. Every pick here is linked in right-hand throw.

The best softball glove for a 12U player is a fastpitch glove between 11.5 and 12.5 inches, and 12 inches is the best all-around size for most 11 and 12 year olds. Our #1 pick is the Wilson A700 12" Infield Fastpitch Glove (about $100), a leather fastpitch glove that fits the 12U job description and lasts into 14U. The best value is the Rawlings Shut Out 12" (about $79), and the budget pick is the Rawlings Sure Catch 12" fastpitch glove (about $50).

12U is a big transition year in fastpitch. Most leagues move to the 12" ball, pitchers throw harder, and players start settling into positions. That changes the glove: the soft 11" youth glove from 10U is now too small for the ball, and for the first time position really drives size (infielders small and quick, outfielders long, pitchers closed-web). Below: the size answer by position, eight verified fastpitch gloves that fit an 11 or 12 year old, the full softball glove size chart by age and position, fastpitch vs slowpitch vs baseball, and the mistakes to avoid. Prices come from live listings and move often, so treat them as approximate.

Wilson A700 12" Infield Fastpitch Glove
#1 · Best overall

Wilson A700 12" Infield Fastpitch Glove

~$100

The A700 is the first rung of Wilson's leather fastpitch ladder, above the youth A440 and A500 lines, and the 12" infield pattern is the most versatile size in 12U softball: small enough for third base and second, big enough for the 12" ball, and a reasonable size for a player who rotates to the outfield.

Why it is #1: 12U is the age where a leather glove starts to make sense. Hands are strong enough to break one in, the 12" size will still fit at 13 and 14, and a leather pocket holds its shape and closes the same way every time in a way soft youth gloves do not. At about $100 it costs double a budget glove and lasts far longer.

Buy 12U leather at 12". It is the size a player can use at almost every position through 14U, so the extra cost is spread across three or more seasons.

It needs a real break-in (our glove break-in guide works for softball gloves too). Linked in right-hand throw; a left-hand throw version is also sold. The black and white colorway includes white, so if she pitches, check your league's pitcher glove color rules.

👍 What we like
  • Leather fastpitch build
  • 12" fits most 12U positions
  • Lasts into 14U
  • Wilson fastpitch pattern for the 12" ball
  • Both throwing hands available
👎 What we don't
  • Needs a real break-in
  • Costs double the budget picks
  • White trim: check pitcher color rules
Who should buy it: Most 12U players, especially travel players ready for their first leather glove.

Rawlings Shut Out Series 12" Softball Glove
#2 · Best value

Rawlings Shut Out Series 12" Softball Glove

~$79

The Shut Out series sits above Rawlings' Sure Catch youth line: a more structured fastpitch glove that holds its shape through a full season. In 12" it matches our #1 pick's size for about $20 less, which makes it the value choice for a 12U player who plays a lot but does not need to spend $100.

Like any structured glove, it plays best after a few weeks of catch. It is also sold in 11.5", 12.5" and 13", so a family can stay in the same line as positions settle. Linked in right-hand throw. The white and teal colorway is a fielder's glove; pitchers should check their league's color rules.

👍 What we like
  • About $20 less than the Wilson A700
  • Correct 12" size for 12U
  • Holds its shape through a season
  • Same line comes in 11.5" to 13"
👎 What we don't
  • Needs a break-in
  • White/teal colorway not ideal for pitchers
  • Less premium leather feel than the A700
Who should buy it: 12U fielders who want a structured 12" glove at a lower price.

Rawlings Sure Catch Series Fastpitch Glove 12"
#3 · Budget pick

Rawlings Sure Catch Series Fastpitch Glove 12"

~$50

Not every 12U player needs leather. For a rec player, a first-year 11 year old, or a player whose hands are still catching up, the Sure Catch 12" fastpitch glove gives the right size for the 12" ball in a soft, easy-closing build that is close to game-ready out of the box.

The trade is lifespan and pocket structure: a soft glove wears and loses shape faster than leather. For one or two rec seasons, that is fine, and at about $50 it leaves room in the budget for a fastpitch bat that fits. Linked in right-hand throw.

👍 What we like
  • Correct 12" size at a budget price
  • Soft and easy to close
  • Nearly game-ready
  • Good for players new to the 12" ball
👎 What we don't
  • Wears faster than leather
  • Pocket is less structured
  • Not a travel-ball glove
Who should buy it: Rec players, first-year 12U players, and families on a budget.

Wilson A500 Siren 12.5" Outfield Fastpitch Glove
#4 · Best outfield

Wilson A500 Siren 12.5" Outfield Fastpitch Glove

~$80

12U outfielders are covering real ground for the first time, and they need a longer glove than infielders. The A500 Siren 12.5" is the outfield glove we recommend most for 10U to 14U, because it gives real reach and a deeper pocket without feeling heavy on the end of a young arm. It is also the #1 pick in our fastpitch outfield gloves guide.

Buy it for a player who is mostly an outfielder. For a player who splits time between infield and outfield, the 12" Wilson A700 or Rawlings Shut Out is the better all-around size. Linked in right-hand throw (2026 model).

👍 What we like
  • 12.5" outfield reach
  • Light for its size
  • Carries into 14U outfield
  • Popular, easy to find in both hands
👎 What we don't
  • Too long for infield play
  • Not a high-end leather gamer
  • Only buy for a true outfielder
Who should buy it: 12U players who play mostly outfield.

Easton Fundamental Series 12" Fastpitch Glove (Basket Web)
#5 · Best closed web

Easton Fundamental Series 12" Fastpitch Glove (Basket Web)

~$97

A closed basket web does two jobs: it gives a deep, forgiving pocket for a utility player, and it hides the ball, which is what a pitcher needs so hitters and base coaches cannot read the grip. The Easton Fundamental 12" pairs that basket web with better leather than a youth glove, in the 12" size that fits a 12U pitcher.

The listing colorway is black, white and mint. Because many fastpitch rulebooks restrict white, gray and optic yellow on a pitcher's glove, a pitcher should check her league's rule before using a glove with white in it. If she needs an all-dark pitcher's glove, the Rawlings R9 12" in black with a Trap-eze web (about $150) is the premium option. Linked in right-hand throw.

👍 What we like
  • Closed basket web hides the grip
  • Better leather than youth gloves
  • 12" pitcher and utility size
  • Forgiving deep pocket
👎 What we don't
  • Needs a break-in
  • White in the colorway: check pitcher rules
  • Costs close to the A700
Who should buy it: 12U pitchers (check color rules) and utility players who want a closed web.

Mizuno MVP Prime 11.5" Fastpitch Glove (T-Web)
#6 · Best middle infield

Mizuno MVP Prime 11.5" Fastpitch Glove (T-Web)

~$130

A shortstop or second baseman at 12U wins with fast hands: catch, find the ball, throw. A smaller glove helps, which is why middle infielders stay at 11.5" even as the rest of the team moves to 12". The Mizuno MVP Prime is a mid-tier leather fastpitch line, and this 11.5" T-web version is built for exactly that quick exchange.

At about $130 it is more than most 12U players need, but for a committed middle infielder it is a glove she can keep through 14U and beyond, since 11.5" stays a normal middle infield size all the way to high school. Linked in right-hand throw.

👍 What we like
  • 11.5" size for quick transfers
  • Mizuno leather fastpitch line
  • Stays a valid size through high school
  • Open T-web for infield
👎 What we don't
  • About $130
  • Needs a break-in
  • Too small for outfield
Who should buy it: Committed 12U shortstops and second basemen.

Rawlings R9 Youth Contour Fit Fastpitch Glove 12" (H-Web)
#7 · Premium youth

Rawlings R9 Youth Contour Fit Fastpitch Glove 12" (H-Web)

~$140

One problem with buying leather at 12U: many 12" leather gloves are cut for adult hands, so a smaller 11 year old ends up with a hand opening she cannot fill. Rawlings' Contour Fit is its youth pattern, designed around smaller hands, and this R9 version puts it in the 12" size with an H-web for infield and utility play.

It is the right premium pick for a smaller or younger 12U travel player who wants real leather that actually fits. At about $140 it is the most expensive glove here, so it only makes sense for a player who will use it hard. Linked in right-hand throw.

👍 What we like
  • Youth Contour Fit pattern for smaller hands
  • R9 leather
  • 12" H-web for infield and utility
  • Better fit than adult 12" leather gloves
👎 What we don't
  • Most expensive pick here
  • Needs a break-in
  • Premium price for a growing hand
Who should buy it: Smaller or younger 12U travel players who want leather that fits.

Franklin Fastpitch Pro 12" Softball Glove
#8 · Lowest price

Franklin Fastpitch Pro 12" Softball Glove

~$28

If she is trying softball for the first time at 11 or 12, or you need a spare for practice, the Franklin Fastpitch Pro 12" is the cheapest real fastpitch glove in the right size. It is correctly shaped for the 12" ball and soft enough to use right away.

It will not form a quality pocket or last like the leather gloves above, so we would not buy it for a travel player. For a first rec season, a backyard glove, or a sibling who plays once a week, it does the job. Linked in right-hand throw ("righty").

👍 What we like
  • Lowest price on this page
  • Correct 12" size
  • Fastpitch pattern
  • Good spare glove
👎 What we don't
  • Basic materials
  • Will not form a quality pocket
  • Not for travel ball
Who should buy it: First-season players, spare or backyard use, and tight budgets.

What size softball glove does a 12U player need?

A 12U softball player (ages 11 to 12) needs a fastpitch glove between 11.5 and 12.5 inches, and 12 inches is the best all-around size. Glove size is measured from the heel to the top of the index finger, following the pocket. At 12U, position drives the number:

12U positionGlove sizeWebPick from this page

First base12" to 12.5" mittMittSee first base mitts
CatcherAbout 32" to 33" mitt (circumference)MittSee catcher's mitts

Fit check: she should close the glove one-handed without strain, her fingers should reach well into the stalls, and the hand opening should not slide around. A smaller 11 year old may still be best at 11.5" everywhere; a youth pattern like the Rawlings R9 Contour Fit helps. The full ladder lives in our glove size chart.

Softball glove size chart by age and position

Most leagues use an 11" softball through 10U and the 12" ball from 12U up (check your league), which is why fastpitch glove sizes jump at 12U:

Age (years)BallInfieldPitcherOutfield
8U (7 to 8)11"10.5" to 11"11"11" to 11.5"
10U (9 to 10)11"11" to 11.5"11.5" to 12"11.5" to 12"
12U (11 to 12)12"11.5" to 12"12"12" to 12.5"
14U (13 to 14)12"11.75" to 12"12" to 12.5"12.5" to 13"
High school (14 to 18)12"11.5" to 12.5"12" to 12.5"12.5" to 13"

Mitts are measured differently: first base mitts by length (12" to 13"), catcher's mitts around the outside (about 31.5" for small youth models up to about 34.5" for adults).

Fastpitch vs slowpitch vs baseball gloves at 12U

Buy a fastpitch glove. The switch to the 12" ball at 12U makes the difference bigger than ever:

  • Fastpitch gloves have a deeper pocket for the 12" ball and a narrower hand opening and finger stalls sized for smaller hands. Most fastpitch patterns are built for girls and women. Every glove on this page is fastpitch.
  • Slowpitch gloves are built for adult rec leagues: typically 12.5" to 15", with a wide hand opening and a very deep pocket for high-arc balls. Too big and too slow for fastpitch, and the hand opening is usually too wide for a 12 year old.
  • Baseball gloves have a shallow pocket for a 9" ball. The 12" softball does not seat and pops out. A 12U player still using a baseball glove is giving away outs.

Look for "fastpitch" in the listing title or on the glove. Slowpitch gloves are often sold as just "softball glove," so a 13" to 14" "softball" glove with no fastpitch label is a warning sign.

How to choose a 12U softball glove

  1. Pick the size from her position using the table above. If she plays everywhere, 12" is the default.
  2. Decide leather or soft. Travel players who practice several times a week should move to leather now (the Wilson A700, Rawlings Shut Out, Easton Fundamental, Mizuno MVP Prime, or Rawlings R9). Rec players do fine in a soft glove like the Sure Catch 12".
  3. Choose the web. Pitchers need a closed web (basket or trapeze). Middle infielders prefer open webs (I, H, T) for a faster transfer. Outfielders like closed or H-webs that shade the sun on fly balls.
  4. Check the fit for her hand, not an adult's. Smaller players should look at youth patterns like the Rawlings R9 Contour Fit.
  5. Confirm the throwing hand. RHT is worn on the left hand; LHT on the right.
  6. Budget: about $50 for a solid rec glove, about $80 to $100 for a first leather glove, $130 to $140 for premium.

When to size up to a 14U glove

If you buy a 12" glove at 12U, she may never need to size up as an infielder: 11.75" to 12" is still the normal 14U infield size. The changes at 14U are about position and quality, not length:

  • Outfielders often move from 12.5" to 13" at 14U.
  • Pitchers may go to 12" to 12.5" with a closed web.
  • Travel players who have worn out a youth glove move up to higher-grade leather.

Our best softball glove for 14U guide covers that step. If your 12U player is on the small side, the 10U guide has 11" to 11.5" options that still fit a smaller hand.

Common 12U glove mistakes

  • Keeping the 11" youth glove. With the 12" ball, a small youth glove drops balls. Most 12U players need at least 11.5".
  • Buying an outfield-size glove for an infielder. A 12.5" or 13" glove on a shortstop slows every transfer.
  • Buying a slowpitch glove. Big "softball" gloves without a fastpitch label are usually slowpitch. Skip them.
  • Leather with no break-in plan. A stiff glove left in the bag stays stiff. Break it in with catch, and condition it with a glove care kit once a season.
  • A pitcher in a white or open-web glove. Many rulebooks restrict pitcher glove colors, and an open web shows her grip.
  • Using a fielding glove at catcher. 12U pitching is fast enough that a catcher needs a real fastpitch catcher's mitt.

Rules and gear notes for 12U

Two rules matter for glove buying at 12U. Pitcher glove colors: many fastpitch rulebooks (USA Softball and high school rules among them) bar pitchers from gloves in the ball's colors, typically white, gray or optic yellow, and an umpire can make a pitcher change gloves mid-game. Details differ by organization and change over time, so check your league's current rulebook. Face protection: many leagues require or strongly recommend fielding masks for pitchers and corner infielders at this age; our fastpitch fielding mask guide covers the options.

12U is also where many teams start calling pitches from the dugout. If your team is looking at that, our free pitch-calling app guide explains how it works: the coach taps the call on a phone and the catcher hears it in a helmet headset, with no signs for the other dugout to steal.

FAQ

What size softball glove for 12U?

Most 12U players should use a 12 inch fastpitch glove. Middle infielders can go 11.5 to 11.75 inches, pitchers 12 inches with a closed web, and outfielders 12 to 12.5 inches. First base and catcher use mitts with their own sizes.

What size softball glove for a 12 year old?

Usually 12 inches for infield and all-around play, 12 to 12.5 inches for outfield. A smaller 12 year old or a shortstop may prefer 11.5 inches. Check the fit by having her open and close the glove one-handed ten times.

What size softball glove for an 11 year old?

Usually 11.5 to 12 inches. An 11 year old moving up from 10U with a smaller hand may be best at 11.5 inches, or in a youth-fit leather glove like the Rawlings R9 Contour Fit 12 inch.

What is the best fastpitch glove for a 12 year old girl?

Our #1 pick is the Wilson A700 12 inch infield fastpitch glove (about $100), a leather glove that fits most positions and lasts into 14U. The best value is the Rawlings Shut Out 12 inch (about $79), and the budget pick is the Rawlings Sure Catch 12 inch fastpitch glove (about $50).

Should a 12U softball player have a leather glove?

If she plays travel ball or practices several times a week, yes. 12U hands are strong enough to break in leather, and a 12 inch leather glove lasts through 14U. Rec players are fine in a soft fastpitch glove.

What glove does a 12U softball pitcher need?

A 12 inch glove with a closed web, such as a basket or trapeze web, so hitters cannot see her grip. Many rulebooks restrict white, gray and optic yellow on pitcher gloves, so a dark colorway is safest. Check your league's rulebook.

What size ball does 12U softball use?

Most 12U fastpitch leagues use the 12 inch softball, up from the 11 inch ball used through 10U. That is why many players need a bigger, deeper fastpitch glove at 12U. Check your league's rules.

Can you use a slowpitch glove for fastpitch?

It is not recommended. Slowpitch gloves are usually 12.5 to 15 inches with wide hand openings and huge pockets, built for adult rec leagues. They are too big and slow for fastpitch, especially for a 12 year old.

Does a 12U first baseman need a first base mitt?

It helps. A fastpitch first base mitt (about 12 to 12.5 inches for 12U) has a longer, deeper scoop for picking throws. A regular glove still works, but a player who is at first most games benefits from a mitt.
