Best overall: a leather 12-inch fastpitch glove for infield and utility
~$130 price and availability on Amazon
View on Amazon →Key takeaways
- Size by position at 14U: middle infield 11.75", third base and utility 12", pitcher 12" to 12.5" with a closed web, outfield 12.5" to 13".
- #1 pick: Mizuno MVP Prime 12" (about $130), a leather fastpitch glove with a closed tartan web that covers infield and utility play.
- Runner-up and best value: Wilson A700 12" (about $100). Budget: Rawlings Shut Out 12" (about $79) and Shut Out 13" for outfield (about $75).
- Pitchers: buy a dark glove. Many rulebooks bar white, gray and optic yellow on a pitcher's glove. Our pitcher pick is the all-black Rawlings R9 12" with a Trap-eze web (about $150).
- 14U is leather age. Hands are close to adult size, and a quality 12" leather glove bought now can last into high school.
- First base and catcher use mitts: see our fastpitch first base mitt and catcher's mitt guides. Every glove here is linked in right-hand throw.
The best softball glove for a 14U player is a leather fastpitch glove sized by position: about 12 inches for infield and utility play, 12 to 12.5 inches with a closed web for pitchers, and 12.5 to 13 inches for outfielders. Our #1 pick is the Mizuno MVP Prime 12" (about $130), and the best value is the Wilson A700 12" (about $100).
At 14U, hands are close to adult size and positions are mostly settled, so the glove question changes from "what fits her age" to "what fits her position." That is also why 14U is the age to invest in a real leather glove: a 12" infield glove or a 13" outfield glove bought now is often the glove she carries into high school ball. Below: the size answer by position, eight verified fastpitch gloves, the full size chart by age and position, fastpitch vs slowpitch vs baseball, the pitcher glove color rule, and the mistakes to skip. Prices come from live listings and move often; treat them as approximate.

Mizuno MVP Prime 12" Fastpitch Glove (Tartan Web)
~$130
The MVP Prime is Mizuno's mid-tier leather fastpitch line, and the 12" size with a closed tartan web is the most versatile glove a 14U player can own: right for third base, good at second and in the outfield corners, and a closed web that keeps the ball hidden and the pocket deep.
Why it is our #1 at 14U: it is real leather at a price well below the pro-grade lines, and the 12" size is still correct at 16U and in high school for most infield and utility players. That means the break-in you do this year pays off for several seasons. It is also the same line as the 13" outfield glove in our fastpitch outfield gloves guide.
One caution for pitchers: this listing is white and grey, colors many rulebooks do not allow on a pitcher's glove. For a pitcher, see the all-black Rawlings R9 below. Linked in right-hand throw.
- Leather fastpitch build
- 12" size fits infield and utility through high school
- Closed tartan web, deep pocket
- Priced below pro-grade lines
- Needs a real break-in
- White and grey colorway is a problem for pitchers under many rulebooks
- About $30 more than the Wilson A700
Wilson A700 12" Infield Fastpitch Glove
~$100
The A700 is Wilson's entry into its leather fastpitch lines, and the 12" infield pattern is the size most 14U infielders use. It is about $30 less than our #1 pick, which makes it the value choice for a family that wants leather without paying MVP Prime money. It is also our #1 in the 12U softball glove guide, so a player who bought one at 12U may not need a new glove yet.
It needs a proper break-in and a season of care to form a pocket (see our break-in guide). The black and white colorway has white in it, so pitchers should check their league's color rules. Linked in right-hand throw.
- Leather at about $100
- Correct 12" infield size
- Wilson fastpitch pattern
- Both throwing hands available
- Needs a break-in
- White trim: check pitcher color rules
- Less premium feel than the MVP Prime or R9
Easton Ghost NX 11.75" Fastpitch Glove (H-Web)
~$150
Shortstops and second basemen want the smallest glove on the field, because the game is catch and release. 11.75" with an open H-web is the classic middle infield setup, and the Easton Ghost NX is a well-regarded fastpitch line built on that pattern. The shorter length and open web let her find the ball and get it out fast.
At about $150 it is a serious glove for a serious middle infielder. For a player who moves around the diamond, the 12" MVP Prime or A700 is the better all-around choice. Linked in right-hand throw.
- 11.75" middle infield size
- Open H-web for a fast transfer
- Easton Ghost fastpitch line
- Stays a valid size through high school
- About $150
- Needs a break-in
- Too small for outfield
Rawlings R9 12" Fastpitch Glove (Modified Trap-eze, Black)
~$150
A pitcher's glove has two requirements the others do not: it has to hide her grip, and in many rulebooks it cannot be white, gray or optic yellow. This Rawlings R9 checks both boxes: a closed, modified Trap-eze web that conceals the ball, in all black, in the 12" size most 14U pitchers use.
The R9 is Rawlings' mid-tier leather line, so it breaks in faster than pro-grade leather while holding its shape through a long travel season. It doubles as a solid utility glove on days she is not in the circle. Stock was limited when we checked. Linked in right-hand throw.
- All-black colorway for pitcher color rules
- Closed Trap-eze web hides the grip
- 12" pitcher size
- R9 leather
- About $150
- Limited stock at time of writing
- Closed web is slower for middle infield
Easton Ghost NX 12.5" Fastpitch Glove (Basket Web)
~$150
14U outfielders need a longer glove than infielders: 12.5" to 13" for reach on balls in the gap and a deep pocket that holds the ball on a dead run. The Ghost NX 12.5" with a closed basket web is our outfield pick for this age because it adds reach without going all the way to 13", which some 13 year olds still find heavy.
If your outfielder is tall and strong and wants maximum reach, the 13" budget pick below or the Mizuno MVP Prime 13" in our outfield glove guide are the next step. Linked in right-hand throw.
- 12.5" outfield reach
- Closed basket web, deep pocket
- Easton Ghost leather line
- Lighter than a 13"
- About $150
- Too long for infield
- Needs a break-in
Rawlings R9 12" Fastpitch Glove (Pro H-Web)
~$98
This R9 12" with a Pro H-web was listed at under $100 when we checked, which puts Rawlings' mid-tier leather at A700 money. The 12" size and H-web suit third base and utility players: the open web is light and lets her see the ball into the glove, and the length handles hot shots down the line.
Stock was limited at time of writing and the price on this listing moves. If it has gone up or sold out, the Wilson A700 12" is the equivalent pick. Linked in right-hand throw.
- R9 leather under $100 at time of writing
- 12" third base and utility size
- Pro H-web
- Faster break-in than pro-grade leather
- Limited stock
- Price on this listing moves
- Open web is not for pitchers
Rawlings Shut Out Series 12" Softball Glove
~$79
Not every 14U player needs a $130 glove. For a rec player, a middle school team player, or a family on a budget, the Shut Out 12" is a structured fastpitch glove in the right infield size for about $79. It holds its shape better than youth soft gloves and breaks in faster than high-grade leather.
It will not last as long as the MVP Prime or R9 under heavy travel use. For a player who plays one season a year, that trade is right. Linked in right-hand throw; the white and teal colorway is a fielder's glove.
- About $79
- Correct 12" infield size
- Structured fastpitch pattern
- Faster break-in
- Shorter lifespan under heavy use
- White/teal colorway not for pitchers
- Less premium leather
Rawlings Shut Out Series 13" Softball Glove
~$75
The Shut Out line in 13" gives a tall 14U outfielder maximum reach for about half the price of a premium outfield glove. 13" is the top of the fastpitch outfield range, so it makes sense for a strong player who closes a big glove easily and covers a lot of ground.
For a smaller 13 year old, 12.5" is the better outfield size. Linked in right-hand throw.
- 13" maximum outfield reach
- About $75
- Same Shut Out line as the 12"
- Good first 13" glove
- Heavy for smaller 13 year olds
- Not a premium leather gamer
- Outfield only
What size softball glove does a 14U player need?
At 14U (ages 13 to 14), glove size depends on position: 11.75" to 12" for infield, 12" to 12.5" for pitchers, 12.5" to 13" for outfield. Glove size is measured from the heel to the top of the index finger, following the pocket.
| 14U position | Glove size | Web | Pick from this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortstop, second base | 11.5" to 11.75" | Open (I, H) | Easton Ghost NX 11.75" |
| Third base, utility | 12" | Any | Mizuno MVP Prime 12" or Wilson A700 12" |
| Pitcher | 12" to 12.5" | Closed, dark color | Rawlings R9 12" black Trap-eze |
| Outfield | 12.5" to 13" | Closed, basket or H | Easton Ghost NX 12.5" |
| First base | 12.5" to 13" mitt | Mitt | First base mitts |
| Catcher | About 33" to 34" mitt | Mitt | Catcher's mitts |
If she plays two positions, size for the one she plays most, or keep two gloves (common at 14U travel ball: an infield glove plus an outfield glove). The full ladder is in our glove size chart.
Softball glove size chart by age and position
The 12" ball is standard from 12U up in most leagues, so 14U sizes are close to high school and adult fastpitch sizes:
| Age (years) | Ball | Infield | Pitcher | Outfield |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8U (7 to 8) | 11" | 10.5" to 11" | 11" | 11" to 11.5" |
| 10U (9 to 10) | 11" | 11" to 11.5" | 11.5" to 12" | 11.5" to 12" |
| 12U (11 to 12) | 12" | 11.5" to 12" | 12" | 12" to 12.5" |
| 14U (13 to 14) | 12" | 11.75" to 12" | 12" to 12.5" | 12.5" to 13" |
| High school (14 to 18) | 12" | 11.5" to 12.5" | 12" to 12.5" | 12.5" to 13" |
Mitts: first base mitts run 12" to 13" long; catcher's mitts are measured around the outside, about 33" to 34.5" for 14U and older players.
Fastpitch vs slowpitch vs baseball gloves
A 14U player needs a fastpitch glove. The three types look similar online but play very differently:
- Fastpitch gloves have a deep pocket for the 12" ball and a narrower hand opening and finger stalls built for fastpitch players, most of them girls and women. Every glove on this page is fastpitch.
- Slowpitch gloves are for adult rec leagues: usually 12.5" to 15", with a wide hand opening and an oversized pocket for slow, arcing balls. They are too big and too slow for fastpitch infield play, and often too loose on a 14 year old's hand.
- Baseball gloves have a shallower pocket for a 9" ball. A 12" softball does not seat in it. Some adult baseball gloves are close in length, but the pocket and hand opening are wrong for fastpitch.
If a listing says "softball" without "fastpitch," check whether it is a slowpitch glove before buying. Big sizes (13.5" and up) with no fastpitch label are almost always slowpitch.
How to choose a 14U softball glove
- Size to her main position using the table above.
- Choose leather quality by use. Rec and school players: Rawlings Shut Out (about $75 to $79). Travel players: Wilson A700, Mizuno MVP Prime, Rawlings R9, Easton Ghost NX ($98 to $150). Save pro-grade ($200+) for high school varsity; see our high school guide.
- Match the web to the job. Middle infield: open I or H web. Pitcher: closed web in a dark color. Outfield: closed, basket or H web. Utility: closed or H.
- Plan the break-in. Leather needs a few weeks of catch before games. Buy in the off-season if you can, and condition it with a glove care kit.
- Confirm the throwing hand. RHT is worn on the left hand; LHT on the right.

The pitcher glove color rule
This trips up more 14U families than any other glove issue. Many fastpitch rulebooks, including USA Softball and high school (NFHS) rules, restrict pitchers from using a glove in the ball's colors, typically white, gray or optic yellow, the idea being that a glove in the ball's colors makes the pitch harder for the hitter to pick up. The exact wording, exceptions for logos and lacing, and enforcement differ by organization and change over time, and an umpire can make a pitcher switch gloves before she throws a pitch.
The safe approach: buy a pitcher's glove in a dark color (black, navy, brown, dark blue) with a closed web, like the all-black Rawlings R9 12", and check your league's current rulebook. Many popular fastpitch gloves, including several on this page, come in white or grey colorways that are fine for fielders but a problem in the circle.
When to move to a high school glove
If she already has a 12" infield glove or a 12.5" to 13" outfield glove at 14U, she may not need a bigger size for high school. The high school upgrade is about leather grade and position specialization:
- Varsity-bound players often move to pro-grade leather (Wilson A2000, Rawlings Heart of the Hide).
- Pitchers who were using a fielding glove move to a dedicated pitcher's pattern.
- Outfielders who were at 12.5" may go to 13".
Our best high school softball glove guide goes position by position. If your 14U player is still growing into adult sizes, the 12U guide has youth-fit options.
Common 14U glove mistakes
- One glove for every position. A 13" outfield glove at shortstop, or an 11.75" glove in center field, costs plays. Many 14U travel players carry two gloves.
- A white pitcher's glove. See the color rule above.
- Buying pro-grade leather in-season. A $250 glove needs weeks of break-in. Buy in the off-season.
- A slowpitch glove. Big "softball" gloves without a fastpitch label are usually slowpitch.
- Skipping care. A leather glove that gets wet and dries in a hot car cracks. Condition it once or twice a season.
- Using a fielding glove at catcher. At 14U pitching speeds, catchers need a real fastpitch catcher's mitt.
FAQ
What size softball glove for 14U?
It depends on position. Middle infielders use 11.5 to 11.75 inches, third base and utility players 12 inches, pitchers 12 to 12.5 inches with a closed web, and outfielders 12.5 to 13 inches. First base and catcher use mitts.
What size softball glove for a 13 year old?
Usually 12 inches for infield and all-around play, 12.5 inches for outfield, and 11.75 inches for a shortstop or second baseman. A smaller 13 year old may still be best at 11.5 to 12 inches.
What size softball glove for a 14 year old?
Most 14 year olds use adult fastpitch sizes: 11.75 to 12 inches in the infield, 12 to 12.5 inches as a pitcher, and 12.5 to 13 inches in the outfield.
What is the best softball glove for 14U?
Our #1 pick is the Mizuno MVP Prime 12 inch fastpitch glove (about $130). The best value is the Wilson A700 12 inch (about $100), the best pitcher's glove is the all-black Rawlings R9 12 inch Trap-eze (about $150), and the best budget glove is the Rawlings Shut Out 12 inch (about $79).
Can a softball pitcher use a white glove?
Often not. Many fastpitch rulebooks, including USA Softball and high school rules, restrict pitchers from gloves in white, gray or optic yellow. Details differ by organization, so check your league's current rulebook and buy a dark pitcher's glove to be safe.
What glove web is best for a softball pitcher?
A closed web, such as a basket, closed or trapeze web, so hitters and base coaches cannot see her grip change between pitches.
Should a 14U player buy a pro-grade glove?
Usually not yet. Mid-tier leather gloves (about $100 to $150) perform well and break in faster. Pro-grade gloves at $200 and up make more sense for high school varsity and college-bound players whose hands have stopped growing.
Do 14U softball players need two gloves?
Many travel players do. A player who splits time between infield and outfield often carries a 12 inch infield glove and a 12.5 to 13 inch outfield glove, because one size is a compromise at both.
Is a slowpitch glove OK for 14U fastpitch?
No. Slowpitch gloves are usually oversized, with wide hand openings and deep pockets built for adult rec leagues. A 14U fastpitch player should use a fastpitch glove.
