How a radar gun app actually measures speed (and why it drifts)

A phone radar app is a stopwatch with a camera. You enter the distance the ball travels (usually the pitching distance), the app records video at the phone's frame rate, and it either auto-detects or asks you to mark the frames where the ball leaves the hand and reaches the glove. Speed equals distance divided by elapsed frames. Three errors stack up: the frame rate (at 60 fps a one-frame miss on a 46-foot pitch at 55 mph is about 5 mph of error), the distance (most people type the nominal mound distance and the real release point is 4 to 6 feet in front of the rubber), and the tap (a tired thumb in the dugout is not a timing gate).

The result is a reading that is sometimes close and sometimes not, with no way to know which. Apps that claim "radar" in the name are using the word as marketing. Your phone has no Doppler radar hardware, and a "premium" in-app subscription does not add one.

How a real radar gun measures speed

A radar gun transmits a signal, receives the reflection off the moving ball, and reads the frequency shift, which is proportional to the ball's speed toward the gun. There is no frame rate, no distance to type in, and no tapping. An app is fine when the number is entertainment. A tee-ball parent who wants to say "he threw 30," a backyard contest between siblings, a coach who is curious whether the new kid is in the 40s or the 50s, or a one-time check before a family decides whether a gun is worth buying. In all of those, a reading that is 5 mph off changes nothing.

The app also works as a rough bat-speed or exit-velocity gimmick on a tee, where the distances are short and the ball is easy to frame. Treat it as a game and it delivers exactly that.

Compare it to the right benchmark and then stop obsessing. A real gun tells you where a pitcher sits and, more importantly, whether the trend over months is up. That is the whole point of measuring.
