Key takeaways

  • Size answer: 28 to 30 inches, -11 to -13 drop. The most common 10U bat is a 29 inch -11 or -12. Smaller 9 year olds start at 28; a tall 10 year old can swing 30.
  • #1 pick: Easton Ghost Youth (-11, 29 inch, about $60). One-piece aluminum, the title says approved for all fields, and it is the bat most 10U dugouts already trust.
  • Runner-up and best value: Louisville Slugger Diva (-11.5, 29 inch, about $40). Lighter than a -11 and the easiest yes on price.
  • Lightest swings: Mizuno Finch (-13, about $100) and the two-piece Rawlings Kraze (-13, about $150). Premium: Easton Ghost OG composite (-11, about $380).
  • Stamp before brand. 10U rec usually follows USA Softball rules and a lot of 10U travel ball plays USSSA. Bats approved for all fields cover most leagues; confirm with yours.
  • Do not jump to -10 yet. A -10 makes most 10U hitters late. Stay at -11 to -13 until she is clearly early on pitches.

The best softball bat for most 10U players is a 28 to 30 inch fastpitch bat with a -11 to -13 drop, and our #1 pick is the Easton Ghost Youth (-11, 29 inch) at about $60. It is one-piece aluminum, its Amazon title states approved for all fields, and 29 inches is the single most common length for a 9 or 10 year old. On a tighter budget, the Louisville Slugger Diva (-11.5, 29 inch) is about $40 and is a touch lighter at the same length.

10U is where fastpitch gets real: kid pitch, faster pitching every month, and for a lot of families the first taste of travel ball. It is also the age where parents start asking whether a bigger, pricier bat will help. Usually it will not. What wins at 10U is a bat she can get to the ball on time, which means the right length for her height and a drop light enough that she is not muscling it. Below are 8 fastpitch bats in 10U lengths and drops, each with the exact size we linked, plus the sizing chart and fit tests to get it right the first time.

Easton Ghost Youth Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)
#1 · Best overall

Easton Ghost Youth Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)

~$60

If you want the one bat that is right for the largest share of 10U players, this is it. The linked listing is the 29 inch Ghost Youth: a -11 drop, one-piece aluminum, and "Approved for All Fields" in the title. That last part matters at 10U, when a player might do a rec season, a fall travel team and a USSSA tournament in the same year.

Why -11 is the 10U default: it is light enough that an average 9 or 10 year old can swing it on time against kid pitch, with enough mass behind the ball to drive it. Go lighter only if she is small or late; go heavier only when she is clearly early.

At about $60, it costs a little more than an entry bat and far less than a composite. The same model is sold from 26 to 31 inches, so when she grows into a 30 or 31 inch bat for 12U, you can buy the next length of a bat she already likes. For most 10U families, this is the buy.

👍 What we like
  • Title states approved for all fields
  • -11 drop suits most 9 and 10 year olds
  • 29 inch listing is the most common 10U length
  • Same model sized 26 to 31 inches
👎 What we don't
  • One-piece aluminum can sting on cold-day mishits
  • Less pop than a two-piece composite
  • Not the lightest choice for a small 9 year old
Who should buy it: Most 10U players in rec or travel ball. The safe all-around choice.

Louisville Slugger Diva (-11.5) Fastpitch Bat (29 in)
#2 · Best value

Louisville Slugger Diva (-11.5) Fastpitch Bat (29 in)

~$40

The Diva is the classic first fastpitch bat, and the linked 2025 listing is 29 inches and 17.5 ounces, a -11.5 drop. That half ounce under a -11 is a small but real help for a 9 year old in her first kid pitch season: she gets the barrel around a little sooner.

It is alloy, ready to hit out of the wrapper and happy in cold spring weather. It will not feel like a premium bat and a strong 10 year old may outgrow it within a season, but at about $40 it is the smartest money on this page for a player still learning the swing. Pair it with softball batting gloves and she is set.

👍 What we like
  • About $40, the lowest price here
  • -11.5 drop: lighter than a -11 at 29 inches
  • Alloy, no break-in needed
  • Widely recommended first bat
👎 What we don't
  • Entry-level feel and pop
  • Title does not list certification marks; check the bat
  • Stronger 10U hitters may outgrow it fast
Who should buy it: First-year 10U players, rec families, and anyone buying a bat she may outgrow in a season.

DeMarini Uprising (-12) Fastpitch Bat (29 in)
#3 · Best -12

DeMarini Uprising (-12) Fastpitch Bat (29 in)

~$80

The Uprising is DeMarini's -12 youth fastpitch bat, and the linked listing is the 2025 model at 29 inches and 17 ounces. A -12 is one full ounce lighter than a -11 at the same length, which is often exactly what fixes a 10U hitter who keeps fouling pitches off to the opposite side.

At about $80 it is a mid-range buy. Choose it over the Ghost Youth when your player is average size but late, or when a coach keeps saying "quicker hands." The -12 drop also carries into early 12U for a smaller player. The title does not list certifications, so check the barrel against your league.

👍 What we like
  • -12 drop at 29 inches: 17 ounces
  • Good for average-size hitters who are late
  • Carries into early 12U
  • Trusted DeMarini youth line
👎 What we don't
  • Title does not list certification marks
  • About $20 more than the Ghost Youth
  • Stock in this length is limited
Who should buy it: Average-size 10U hitters who need a quicker swing than a -11 gives them.

Mizuno Finch Fastpitch Bat (-13, 29 in)
#4 · Light -13 aluminum

Mizuno Finch Fastpitch Bat (-13, 29 in)

~$100

The Finch is Mizuno's -13 aluminum fastpitch bat, and the linked listing is the blue and white 29 inch length. At -13, a 29 inch bat weighs about 16 ounces, roughly two ounces lighter than a -11 of the same length. For a small 9 year old who needs the reach of a 29 inch bat but not the weight, that is the answer.

At about $100 it costs less than the two-piece Kraze and gives the same very light swing weight in a durable single-piece build. The trade-off is a stiffer feel on mishits. As she gets stronger she will move to a -12, then a -11. Check the certification stamp on the bat against your league.

👍 What we like
  • -13 drop: about 16 oz at 29 inches
  • Aluminum durability, no break-in
  • Cheaper than a two-piece -13
  • Model runs 27 to 33 inches
👎 What we don't
  • Stiffer feel than a two-piece bat
  • Stronger 10U hitters will want more mass
  • Check the stamp for your league
Who should buy it: Small or late 9 and 10 year olds who need length without weight.

Rawlings Kraze Fastpitch Bat (-13, 2-Pc Hybrid, 28 in)
#5 · Step-up hybrid

Rawlings Kraze Fastpitch Bat (-13, 2-Pc Hybrid, 28 in)

~$150

The Kraze is a -13 two-piece hybrid, and the linked listing is 28 inches, a great length for a younger or smaller 10U travel player. Two-piece construction separates the handle from the barrel, which damps the sting that makes a young hitter flinch after a cold-day mishit. Combine that with the lightest drop class in fastpitch and you get a bat that is easy to swing fast and comfortable to swing often.

At about $150 it is a real step up from the alloy bats. It makes the most sense for a committed 10U travel player who takes a lot of swings and is on the smaller side. The title does not list certification marks, so confirm the stamp before a tournament.

👍 What we like
  • -13 drop: the lightest swing class
  • Two-piece hybrid damps sting
  • 28 inch length suits younger 10U players
  • Good fit for high-volume travel hitters
👎 What we don't
  • About double the alloy bats
  • Title does not state certification
  • A tall 10 year old needs a longer bat
Who should buy it: Committed, smaller 10U travel players who want the lightest, most comfortable swing.

Easton Amethyst Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)
#6 · Quality alloy

Easton Amethyst Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)

~$70

The Amethyst is Easton's other -11 youth fastpitch bat, and the linked listing is 29 inches with "Approved for All Fields" in the title. It does the same job as the Ghost Youth: a dependable alloy bat, ready to swing out of the wrapper, legal almost everywhere.

At about $70 it runs about $10 more than the Ghost Youth, so buy it when the Ghost is sold out in 29 inches, or when she prefers the look. A steady 10U hitter who does not need the flex of a composite will be very happy with it.

👍 What we like
  • Title states approved for all fields
  • -11 drop at 29 inches
  • Alloy durability in cold weather
  • Trusted Easton build
👎 What we don't
  • Costs a bit more than the Ghost Youth for a similar bat
  • Less pop than a two-piece composite
  • Stock is limited in some lengths
Who should buy it: 10U players who want a Ghost-style -11 alloy bat in a different look or when the Ghost is out.

Rawlings Eclipse Fastpitch Bat (-12, 29 in)
#7 · Alternate -12

Rawlings Eclipse Fastpitch Bat (-12, 29 in)

~$78

The Eclipse is Rawlings' -12 fastpitch bat, and the linked listing is 29 inches. It competes directly with the DeMarini Uprising: same drop, same length, similar price. The newer Eclipse listings in other lengths state one-piece aluminum and approved for all fields; this 29 inch listing's title does not, so check the barrel for your league's stamp.

At about $78, choose between the Eclipse and Uprising on availability and feel. Either one is a smart move for a 10U hitter who is late with a -11 but not small enough to need a -13.

👍 What we like
  • -12 drop at 29 inches
  • Priced with other mid-range -12 bats
  • Model runs up to 32 inches for later
  • Rawlings build
👎 What we don't
  • This listing's title does not state build or certification
  • No real edge over the Uprising
  • One-piece bats can sting on mishits
Who should buy it: 10U hitters who need a -12 and find the Uprising out of stock in 29 inches.

Easton Ghost OG Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)
#8 · Premium composite

Easton Ghost OG Fastpitch Bat (-11, 29 in)

~$380

The Ghost OG is Easton's flagship fastpitch bat, the composite most high-level travel players carry, and the linked 2025 listing is 29 inches, -11, with "Approved for All Fields" in the title. A composite barrel flexes on contact, which delivers more pop and a softer feel on mishits than a one-piece alloy bat.

Composite bats need a short break-in (a few dozen swings off a tee with real softballs, rotating the barrel) and should stay out of very cold weather, where they are more prone to cracking. Our composite break-in guide covers the routine.

At about $380 (prices vary a lot by length and color), this is only worth it for a committed 10U travel hitter with a developed swing, and ideally one who is close to done growing out of 29 inches. For everyone else, the Ghost Youth delivers most of the value for about a sixth of the price.

👍 What we like
  • Title states approved for all fields
  • Composite barrel with more pop and less sting
  • The same Ghost line older players use
  • -11 drop keeps it swingable at 10U
👎 What we don't
  • About six times the Ghost Youth's price
  • Needs a break-in and a cold-weather rule
  • She may outgrow the length in a season
Who should buy it: Serious 10U travel hitters with a developed swing and a family ready to invest.

What size softball bat does a 10U player need?

Most 10U softball players need a 28 to 30 inch fastpitch bat with a -11 to -13 drop, and 29 inches is the most common length. A small 9 year old usually starts at 28, an average 10 year old swings 29, and a tall 10 year old (about 4 feet 5 inches or more) can handle 30. Height and weight predict the right length much better than age.

HeightWeightBat lengthDrop
3'9" to 4'0"60 to 80 lb27" to 28"-11 to -13
4'1" to 4'4"70 to 90 lb28" to 29"-11 to -12
4'5" to 4'8"80 to 100 lb29" to 30"-11 to -12
4'9" to 5'0"90 to 120 lb30" to 31"-10 to -11

If height and weight land in different rows, choose the shorter length and lighter drop. Then confirm with the fit tests below. The full logic of drop weight is in our bat drop explainer, and the same fit tests appear in our youth bat size guide.

How to tell if a softball bat fits a 10 year old

  1. Side test. Stand the bat next to her leg. With her arm hanging relaxed, the knob should reach about the middle of her palm.
  2. Chest test. Knob at the center of her chest, barrel pointed along her outstretched arm. Her fingertips should just reach the end cap.
  3. Arm test. She holds the bat by the handle with her top hand, arm straight out to the side, for about 10 seconds. If the barrel sags, go one drop lighter before you go shorter.
  4. Swing test. Watch five hard swings. If her back elbow drops and the barrel dips below her hands before contact, the bat is too heavy.

Most 10 year olds pass with a 29 inch -11 or -12. A player who fails the arm test at -11 is usually fine at -13 (the Finch or Kraze).

-11, -12 or -13: which drop for a 10U hitter?

Drop is length in inches minus weight in ounces, so a bigger number means a lighter bat. A 29 inch -11 weighs 18 ounces, a -12 weighs 17 and a -13 weighs 16. Two ounces sounds small, but for a 9 year old it is the difference between catching up to kid pitch and fouling everything off.

Her swing right nowDrop to buyExamples
Small, new to kid pitch, or late on most pitches-13Finch, Kraze
Average size, a beat late-12Uprising, Eclipse
Average size, on time-11 to -11.5Ghost Youth, Diva, Amethyst
Big, strong, consistently early-10 (usually 12U)See our 12U guide

When in doubt at 10U, lighter wins. Bat speed and on-time contact matter far more than mass behind the ball at this age.

How to choose the right 10U softball bat

  1. Confirm your league's required stamp before anything else.
  2. Pick the length from her height and weight, then confirm with the fit tests.
  3. Pick the drop from how she swings today, using the table above.
  4. Pick the build from how much she plays. Rec and first-year travel: one-piece alloy (Ghost Youth, Diva). High-volume travel hitter who hates sting: two-piece (Kraze). Serious travel hitter with a developed swing: composite (Ghost OG).
  5. Buy the size she needs now. A bat she swings well this season beats one she will grow into.

USA Softball, USSSA, NSA: which stamp does a 10U bat need?

A 10U bat must carry the certification mark your league or tournament requires, and 10U is the age where that most often varies within one season. A rec league may follow USA Softball rules while a weekend travel tournament runs under USSSA. The marks you will see:

  • USA Softball. The national governing body used by most rec and many travel fastpitch leagues. Look for its certification mark on the barrel or taper.
  • ASA (legacy). USA Softball was the Amateur Softball Association until 2016, so older bats may show an ASA mark. Whether an ASA-only bat is still legal depends on current USA Softball rules and its certified bat list.
  • USSSA. Common in travel ball, with its own fastpitch mark.
  • NSA and ISA. Other sanctioning bodies with their own marks, popular in some regions.

Many current bats carry several of these marks at once, sold as "approved for all fields." The Ghost Youth, Amethyst and Ghost OG above state that in their Amazon titles. For the others, check the barrel in the listing photos or on the bat itself. Rules and non-approved lists change, so confirm with your league's current rulebook before the first game.

When to size up to a 12U bat

Move up when she passes the arm test easily with room to spare, the bat looks short next to her, or she is early on most pitches. For most players that is around 11, when a 30 to 32 inch bat with a -10 to -12 drop becomes the right fit. Our best softball bat for 12U guide covers that step. If she is on the smaller side, our 8U guide has 26 to 28 inch bats that may still fit a young 9 year old, and our youth fastpitch bat roundup compares the most popular 10U to 12U bats.

Common 10U bat mistakes

  • Jumping to a -10 for "power." A heavier bat usually makes a 10U hitter late and kills contact.
  • Buying two inches of "room to grow." An overlong bat drags the swing down and out.
  • Assuming a travel bat is legal in rec, or the reverse. Check the stamp for every league she plays in.
  • Using a composite in the cold. Early spring games below about 60 degrees are hard on composite bats; an alloy backup is cheap insurance.
  • Buying a slowpitch or baseball bat by accident. Look for "fastpitch" and the 2 1/4 inch barrel.
  • Ignoring the helmet. A fastpitch helmet with a face mask that fits matters more for her confidence at the plate than any bat upgrade.

FAQ

What size softball bat for a 10 year old?

Most 10 year olds swing a 29 inch fastpitch bat with a -11 or -12 drop. The full 10U range is 28 to 30 inches with a -11 to -13 drop. Choose by height and weight, then make sure she can hold the bat straight out for about 10 seconds without the barrel sagging.

What size softball bat for a 9 year old?

Most 9 year olds swing a 28 or 29 inch fastpitch bat with a -11 to -13 drop. A small 9 year old may still fit a 27 inch bat; use height and weight rather than age.

What is the best softball bat for 10U?

Our #1 pick is the Easton Ghost Youth (-11, 29 inch, about $60), which its Amazon title lists as approved for all fields. The Louisville Slugger Diva (-11.5, about $40) is the best value, and the Easton Ghost OG (about $380) is the premium composite for serious travel hitters.

What drop should a 10U softball bat be?

A -11 to -13 drop. Average-size 10U hitters do well at -11 or -12, and small or first-year players are usually better at -13. Most 10U hitters are not ready for a -10.

Is a 30 inch bat too big for a 10U player?

For a tall or strong 10 year old, about 4 feet 5 inches or taller, a 30 inch bat can be right. For an average 10U player it is usually one inch too long, and a 29 inch bat will be quicker.

Do 10U softball players need a composite bat?

No. A one-piece alloy bat like the Easton Ghost Youth is the right choice for most 10U players. A two-piece or composite bat can make sense for a committed travel hitter who takes a lot of swings, but it is not required to hit well at 10U.

What stamp does a 10U softball bat need?

Whatever your league requires. Most rec leagues follow USA Softball rules, many travel tournaments use USSSA, and some regions use NSA or ISA. Bats listed as approved for all fields usually carry several marks, but always check your league's current rules.

How much should I spend on a 10U softball bat?

About $40 to $80 buys an excellent 10U bat (Diva, Ghost Youth, Amethyst, Uprising). Two-piece and composite bats run from about $150 to about $380. For most 10U players the roughly $60 Ghost Youth is the value sweet spot.

Can a 10U player use a -10 bat?

A big, strong 10 year old who is consistently early on pitches can, but most 10U hitters swing a -10 late. Try a -11 or -12 first, and move to -10 around 12U.
