Best Bat for 13U (2026): 8 Picks for 12 to 13 Year Olds, From Drop 8 to BBCOR

Most 13U players need a 31 inch bat (30 to 32 by height) with a -8 drop, stepping to -5 as they get stronger, in the stamp their league requires: USSSA for travel, USA or BBCOR for Little League's older divisions, BBCOR for Babe Ruth and PONY. Our #1 pick is the Louisville Slugger Meta Prime USSSA, 31 inch -8 (about $140). Eight verified picks from -8 to BBCOR, plus the plan for getting to -3.

Key takeaways

  • 13U is the drop 8 year. Most players step from -10 to -8 this season, and strong ones to -5, on the way to -3 BBCOR in high school.
  • Size: 31 inches for most 13-year-olds, 30 for a smaller player, 32 for a big one. A 31 inch -8 weighs 23 oz; a -5, 26 oz; a BBCOR, 28 oz.
  • Stamp depends on the league: USSSA for travel (many divisions set a minimum drop), USA or BBCOR for Little League's older divisions, BBCOR for Babe Ruth and PONY. Check your current rulebook.
  • #1 pick: Louisville Slugger Meta Prime USSSA, 31 inch -8 (about $140). Runner-up: DeMarini Zen USSSA, 31 inch -8 (about $160).
  • Best -5 value: Louisville Slugger Meta Prime USSSA, 31 inch -5 (about $100).
  • BBCOR prep on a budget: Easton Tango BBCOR, 31 inch (about $80). A cheap practice BBCOR now makes the high school jump painless.

The best bat for 13U is usually a 31 inch, -8 USSSA bat, the first step down from the -10 bats of 12U toward the -3 BBCOR bats of high school. Our top pick is the Louisville Slugger Meta Prime USSSA, 31 inch -8 (about $140). Stronger players, or those in divisions that require it, move to -5, and players in BBCOR leagues (Babe Ruth, PONY and many older divisions) need a BBCOR bat now.

13U is the most confusing bat year for parents because the rules split three ways. USSSA travel keeps its own stamp but many divisions set a minimum drop. Little League's older divisions allow USA or BBCOR bats. Babe Ruth, PONY and high school are BBCOR. And every step down in drop adds weight a 13-year-old has to handle: a 31 inch bat goes from 21 ounces at -10 to 28 ounces as a BBCOR. Bat rules change by organization, division and season. Confirm with your coach, tournament director or the current rulebook before buying. Coming from 12U? See the 12U guide. The rules tighten again at 14U.

Louisville Slugger 2025 Meta Prime USSSA Bat, 31"/23 oz (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel
#1 · Best overall

Louisville Slugger 2025 Meta Prime USSSA Bat, 31"/23 oz (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel

~$140

The Meta Prime is our top 13U pick because it is the right bat at the right weight at a fair price. The listing is USSSA, 2 3/4 inch barrel, 31 inches, 23 ounces, -8: the center of the 13U chart at the drop most 13-year-olds should be swinging this season. Meta is Louisville Slugger's composite line, known for a big, forgiving barrel and a soft feel on contact.

Going from a 30 inch -10 (20 oz) to a 31 inch -8 (23 oz) is a three-ounce jump. If your player struggles, try the same drop in 30 inches first.

At about $140, the 2025 model is well below current-year flagship prices. Composite needs a short break-in and should stay out of cold weather, which matters for 13U seasons that start in March. USSSA only: not legal in Little League or BBCOR leagues.

👍 What we like
  • 31 inch -8: 23 oz, the 13U sweet spot
  • Big, forgiving composite barrel
  • 2 3/4 inch USSSA barrel
  • Priced well below current flagships
👎 What we don't
  • USSSA only
  • Composite break-in and cold-weather care
  • Illegal in BBCOR-only leagues
Who should buy it: A 13U travel player on a USSSA team moving from -10 to -8.

DeMarini 2026 Zen USSSA Bat, 31"/23 oz (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel
#2 · Runner-up

DeMarini 2026 Zen USSSA Bat, 31"/23 oz (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel

~$160

The Zen is DeMarini's composite line, and the 2026 listing is USSSA, 2 3/4 inch barrel, 31 inches, 23 ounces, -8, the same size as the Meta Prime. Where the Meta leans on barrel size, the Zen is known for a smooth, balanced feel that contact hitters like.

About $160. If your player has swung a Zen at 11U or 12U, this is the natural next bat. Same USSSA-only and composite care caveats.

👍 What we like
  • 31 inch -8: 23 oz
  • Smooth, balanced composite feel
  • Current 2026 model
  • USSSA stamped
👎 What we don't
  • About $160

Easton 2025 Hype FIRE USSSA Bat, 31" (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel
#3 · Premium -8

Easton 2025 Hype FIRE USSSA Bat, 31" (-8), 2 3/4" Barrel

~$198

The Hype Fire is Easton's flagship USSSA composite, and this listing is USSSA, -8, 2 3/4 inch barrel, 31 inches. A huge, forgiving barrel and a premium feel for a committed 13U who plays a full travel schedule.

About $198. The 29 inch version appears in our 14U guide for smaller players; this 31 inch is the right length for most 13-year-olds. It is more bat than most need, and USSSA only.

👍 What we like
  • Easton's flagship composite
  • 31 inch -8
  • Huge, forgiving barrel
  • USSSA stamped
👎 What we don't
  • About $198
  • USSSA only

Louisville Slugger 2025 Meta Prime USSSA Bat, 31"/26 oz (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel
#4 · Best -5 value

Louisville Slugger 2025 Meta Prime USSSA Bat, 31"/26 oz (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel

~$100

Some 13U divisions and tournaments require -5, and some strong 13-year-olds are ready for it anyway. The Meta Prime -5 listing is USSSA, 2 3/4 inch barrel, 31 inches, 26 ounces, -5, at about $100, which makes it the least expensive quality -5 we found.

26 ounces is three more than the -8. Only buy it if the rule requires it or your player passes the hold test easily with a -8. It carries straight into a 14U USSSA season, where -5 is the norm.

👍 What we like
  • About $100 for a quality -5
  • 31 inch, 26 oz
  • Carries into 14U
  • USSSA stamped
👎 What we don't
  • Heavy for most 13-year-olds
  • USSSA only
  • Composite care rules
Who should buy it: A strong 13U, or any 13U in a division that requires -5.

DeMarini 2026 Zen USSSA Bat, 30"/25 oz (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel
#5 · Smaller -5

DeMarini 2026 Zen USSSA Bat, 30"/25 oz (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel

~$140

If your 13-year-old has to swing a -5 but is not big enough for 26 ounces, go one inch shorter. The Zen listing is USSSA, 2 3/4 inch barrel, 30 inches, 25 ounces, -5, one ounce lighter than the 31 inch -5.

About $140. This is exactly the move our size guide recommends when a heavier drop is required: shorten the bat before you sacrifice bat speed.

👍 What we like
  • 30 inch -5: 25 oz
  • Smooth Zen composite
  • Lighter path into -5
  • USSSA stamped
👎 What we don't
  • About $140
  • Short for a big 13U
  • USSSA only
Who should buy it: A smaller 13U in a -5 division.

Marucci CATX2 Senior League USSSA Bat (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel, Balanced
#6 · Best alloy -5

Marucci CATX2 Senior League USSSA Bat (-5), 2 3/4" Barrel, Balanced

~$142

Every -5 above is a composite. For a 13U who plays in cold March weather or just wants a stiff, connected alloy feel, the CATX2 is the answer: USSSA, -5, 2 3/4 inch barrel, balanced per the listing, the same one-piece alloy that dominates 12U USSSA in -10.

About $142. Pick 30 or 31 inches in the size menu. It is also our USSSA pick in the 14U guide, so it covers two seasons.

👍 What we like
  • One-piece alloy: no break-in
  • Fine in cold weather
  • Balanced swing weight
  • Covers 13U and 14U
👎 What we don't
  • USSSA only
  • One-piece feedback on mishits
  • Length is a size-menu choice
Who should buy it: A 13U who wants an alloy -5 that will also serve at 14U.

Easton 2025 Tango BBCOR Bat, 31" (-3)
#7 · BBCOR prep

Easton 2025 Tango BBCOR Bat, 31" (-3)

~$80

The smartest cheap purchase a 13U family can make is a practice BBCOR. The Tango listing is BBCOR, 2 5/8 inch barrel, 31 inches, -3, so 28 ounces, at about $80. Swinging it in the cage once or twice a week builds the strength for high school ball without wrecking this season's game swing.

It is also a legal gamer if your 13-year-old plays Babe Ruth, PONY or another BBCOR league. It is an entry-level alloy with a smaller sweet spot than premium BBCOR bats, which is fine for its job.

👍 What we like
  • About $80
  • 31 inch BBCOR
  • Legal in BBCOR leagues
  • Builds strength for -3
👎 What we don't
  • Entry-level barrel
  • 28 oz is heavy for most 13U games
  • Harsher feel on mishits
Who should buy it: Any 13U heading toward high school, or a 13U in a BBCOR league on a budget.

Easton Speed BBCOR Bat, 30" (-3), 1-Piece Aluminum
#8 · Smaller BBCOR

Easton Speed BBCOR Bat, 30" (-3), 1-Piece Aluminum

~$104

Babe Ruth 13-year-olds and PONY players often face BBCOR rules before they are big enough for 28 ounces. The Speed listing is BBCOR, -3, one-piece aluminum, 30 inches, so 27 ounces: the lightest legal BBCOR option in a sensible length.

About $104. A balanced one-piece aluminum that is easy to swing for a BBCOR bat. When your player grows, the high school guide has the next BBCOR.

👍 What we like
  • 30 inch BBCOR: 27 oz
  • One-piece aluminum, no break-in
  • Legal in BBCOR leagues
  • About $104
👎 What we don't
  • Short for a big 13U
  • Entry-level sweet spot
  • Heavy vs a -8 USSSA bat
Who should buy it: A smaller 13-year-old who must swing BBCOR this season.

What size bat does a 13 year old need?

Most 13-year-olds swing a 31 inch bat (30 to 32 by size) at -8 to -5, or a -3 BBCOR if their league requires it. That matches the 13U row of our youth bat size chart (31 to 32 inches, -8 to -5). Because the drop is getting heavier, a smaller 13U often drops to 30 inches:

PlayerTypical height / weightLength-8 weight-5 weightBBCOR weight
Smaller 13UUnder 5'1"30 in22 oz25 oz27 oz
Typical 13U5'1" to 5'4", 90 to 120 lb31 in23 oz26 oz28 oz
Bigger 13U5'5" and up32 in24 oz27 oz29 oz

The hold test matters more than ever: the player holds the bat straight out with the top hand for 10 to 20 seconds. If a -5 sags, use a -8, or the same -5 an inch shorter. The full ounce table is in bat drop explained.

13U bat rules: USSSA, Little League, Babe Ruth and PONY

Who sanctions your games decides the bat. The picture below is current to the best of our knowledge; every organization revises bat rules, so confirm against the current rulebook or tournament flyer before buying.

If your 13-year-old plays Little League's older divisions and wants a USA bat, a 31 inch -10 like the Louisville Slugger Omaha USA 31 inch -10 (about $120) works. The stamp explainer is USA vs USSSA vs BBCOR.

The 13U step-down plan: -10 to -8 to -5 to BBCOR

High school's BBCOR rule is a cliff: a 12U swinging a 30 inch -10 (20 ounces) will be swinging a 32 inch BBCOR (29 ounces) within two or three years. You do not jump nine ounces; you ladder it, as our bat drop guide explains:

WhenGame bat31 inch weightPractice
12U-1021 ozn/a
Early 13U-823 ozBudget BBCOR in the cage, once or twice a week
Late 13U or 14U-526 ozBBCOR in the cage
Summer before high school-3 BBCOR28 ozn/a

Players who skip the ladder often spend freshman year late on everything; players who step it barely notice the change. The cheap tool that makes it work is a practice BBCOR such as the Easton Tango 31 inch (about $80).

How to choose a 13U bat

  1. Find the rule. USSSA drop minimum, Little League division rule, or BBCOR. This decides everything.
  2. Pick the lightest legal drop the player can control. Usually -8 in USSSA divisions that allow it.
  3. Pick the length: 31 for most, 30 for smaller players or when forced into a heavier drop.
  4. Balanced, not end-loaded, for nearly every 13-year-old.
  5. Alloy or composite: composites (Meta Prime, Zen, Hype Fire) for feel and forgiveness; alloy (CATX2) for cold springs and no break-in.
  6. Add a practice BBCOR if high school is two years away.

When to size up to a 14U bat

At 13U, "sizing up" usually means a heavier drop, not a longer bat. Move from -8 to -5 when your player holds the -8 out easily for 20 seconds, is early on good fastballs, and has grown into a 5'4" to 5'6" frame. Add length only after a growth spurt. The best bat for 14U guide covers the -5 and BBCOR year in detail, including the organization-by-organization rules, starting with the Marucci CATX2 -5 (about $142). If your player is still small, stay on a 12U-weight bat where the rules allow; see the 12U guide.

Common 13U bat mistakes

  1. Buying a -5 before the player is ready. Six ounces over a 30 inch -10 is a new swing. Step through -8 first where the rules allow.
  2. Skipping the rulebook. A -8 is illegal in a division that requires -5, and a USSSA bat is illegal in Babe Ruth.
  3. Going longer and heavier at once. If the rule forces a heavier drop, go an inch shorter.
  4. Buying end-loaded. Balanced bats suit almost every 13-year-old.
  5. Waiting until high school to touch a BBCOR. An $80 practice BBCOR now saves a rough freshman spring.
  6. Forgetting the rest of the kit. Many 13U players move to senior helmets; see batting helmets.

FAQ

What size bat for a 13 year old?

Most 13-year-olds use a 31 inch bat, with 30 inches for smaller players and 32 for bigger ones. The drop is usually -8 or -5 in USSSA, or -3 BBCOR in BBCOR leagues. A 31 inch -8 weighs 23 ounces.

What is the best bat for 13U?

Our #1 pick is the Louisville Slugger Meta Prime USSSA, 31 inch -8, about $140. Runner-up: the DeMarini Zen USSSA, 31 inch -8, about $160. Best -5 value: the Meta Prime -5, 31 inch, about $100. Budget BBCOR: the Easton Tango, 31 inch, about $80.

What drop bat for 13U?

Usually -8, stepping to -5 for strong players or divisions that require it. Our bat drop chart lists -8 to -5 for the 13 to 14 transition. BBCOR leagues require -3.

Is 13U drop 8 or drop 5?

It depends on the organization and division. Many USSSA 13U divisions allow -8 or heavier, and some top divisions have required -5. Babe Ruth and PONY use BBCOR. Check the current rulebook or tournament flyer before buying.

Can a 13U player use a BBCOR bat?

Generally yes. BBCOR bats are accepted in most 13U organizations, and they are required in Babe Ruth and PONY. A BBCOR is heavier (28 ounces at 31 inches), so smaller players may prefer a -8 or -5 where the rules allow it.

Can a 13 year old use a -10 bat?

Only where the rules allow it, such as some Little League divisions with USA bats. Many USSSA 13U divisions set a minimum drop heavier than -10, and BBCOR leagues require -3.

When should my player start using a BBCOR bat?

Start practicing with a budget BBCOR during 13U or 14U, then switch full time when the league requires it and always in high school. Stepping down through -8 and -5 first makes the -3 jump manageable.

Should a 13U buy composite or alloy?

Composite (Meta Prime, Zen, Hype Fire) offers a bigger sweet spot and less sting. Alloy (Marucci CATX2) needs no break-in and is safer in cold weather. Many 13U seasons start in March, which favors alloy for cold-climate families.

How heavy is a 13U bat?

About 22 to 24 ounces for a -8 (30 to 32 inches), 25 to 27 ounces for a -5, and 27 to 29 ounces for a BBCOR.
